Make kinetic typography readable on a small screen

Practical checks for text size, line breaks, contrast, timing, and restrained motion in vertical typography videos.

Design for the viewing size

An editor preview is often larger than the video will appear in a feed. Select the mobile 9:16 format and inspect the composition at approximately phone viewing size. A phrase that is easy to read on a wide monitor can become cramped after it wraps onto three or four lines. Use fewer words per scene before shrinking the type to make everything fit.

Consider this phrase: ‘A little progress every day changes the result.’ One useful arrangement groups ‘A little progress’, ‘every day’, and ‘changes the result’. These groups follow the meaning. A poor arrangement leaves ‘the’ on a line by itself. Rewrite a phrase if the template's automatic wrapping produces an awkward break; the script is part of the layout.

Build a clear visual hierarchy

Choose a primary phrase and a supporting phrase. Let the main idea carry the stronger size or weight, while the support stays readable. Use a consistent typeface for most words. A contrasting font can mark a change of tone, but frequent font changes make the viewer spend attention on style instead of the message.

Start with a dark background and light text, or a light background and dark text. Check the accent color against that background as well as the default text color. A vivid accent may still be hard to read on a similar-colored background. Avoid placing small text over busy visual effects. Pause the preview on a representative frame and ask which words draw your eye first.

Let motion serve the sentence

Use an entrance animation to establish when a phrase becomes relevant. Give the viewer a stable moment to read it before transitioning. If several words move independently at once, reduce the effects or choose a quieter template. A strong animation on the key word can be more effective than a strong animation on every word.

For the phrase ‘Make room for the next idea’, emphasize ‘room’ or ‘next’, depending on your intended meaning. Compare both versions. The purpose of the preview is to discover whether the emphasis tells the right story. Effects such as bounce and rotation should reinforce that choice rather than create a competing rhythm.

Check edges, pacing, and the final file

Keep important words away from the outer edges of the composition. Video platforms may add interface controls or crop previews; the exact overlays vary by platform. Review the downloaded MP4 in the destination's preview before posting. Avoid claiming a universal safe margin that will work for every interface.

Read the sequence aloud during normal playback. If a scene changes before you finish the phrase, increase its duration where the template offers that control or simplify the text. Do a second pass without reading aloud to check whether the motion distracts you. Finally, watch the downloaded video on the intended device. Preview readability and export correctness are separate checks, and both matter.
